A member of CIAM’s Italian group from 1952 to 1960, He was one of the constituents of Team X since 1956.
In addition to his professional practice and university teaching, he has made a critical contribution to the surpassing of the European functionalism and has theorized the user’s participation to the process of projection of architectonic spaces. He is the director of the magazine “Spazio & Società” which he founded, beginning with the first volume in January 1978.

Professor in the faculty of Urban Studies at Venice’s I.U.A.V. and the faculty of Architectonic Projection, at Genoa; he was a Visiting Professor at Yale University, at M.I.T., at Cornell University and UCLA. In 1976 he founded and still directs the International Laboratory of Architecture and Urbanism (ILAUD).
An honorary member of A.I.A., of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of R.I.B.A., he has received numerous international awards and honoris causa degrees from the universities of Lund, Nova Scotia, Oslo, Edinburgh, Lovanio and Geneva. De Carlo is National Academic of San Luca.
