Graduating in Civil Engineering from the Faculty of Bologna in 1913, between 1915-1918 was called up to join the Engineer Corps.
From 1923 to 1932 he had his own practice in Rome with the company Societŕ Ingg. Nervi e Nebbiosi, with which in 1930-32 he built his first project which was to provoke international interest, the Stadio Comunale in Florence.
From 1932, together with his cousin, he established the building firm Nervi e Bartoli which was active up until 1978.

In 1945 he was professor of “Tecnica delle costruzioni” and “Tecnologie dei materiali” at the Faculty of Architecture in Rome, a post he kept until 1962.
In 1950 he was awarded an honary degree by the University of Buenos Aires, the first of many from universities around the world ending with London in 1969. In 1960 he became Accademico Nazionale of San Luca.
